The history of leggings

Like any true fashion girl, knowing the origin of your favorite trends makes wearing them even more pleasing. And there's probably no bigger trend right now than leggings. We're all well aware of the fashion cycle all coming back. But when it comes to leggings, it turns out they've been "coming back" for centuries. When researching the history of leggings, we were surprised to discover that the origin of the trend goes back to the 14th century, and men were actually the first to wear them. But since the mid-20th century, leggings have been a closet staple for women and others who love them.

The origin of the legging

After losing relevance for a few years at the turn of the 21st century, leggings were back, as the decade's biggest “It Girls” went back to wearing capri versions of the trend, often under dresses and skirts. Nicole Richie, the Olsen twins, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were all on board. By the end of the decade, full-length leggings replaced pants for the most part.

Today, celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and Bella Hadid have reintroduced leggings to our wardrobes. Like it or not, these sports loving “It girls” have made them acceptable to wear as pants. Currently, the most popular versions of the trend are streetwear-inspired high-waisted styles and leather leggings, both of which confirm that it's once again acceptable to wear sporty leggings outside the gym.

Leggings for every season

As the fall and winter season approach, the items that are starting to get more and more exposure in daily clothing rotations are leggings. Serving as a "second skin" that helps protect against the cold weather, warm leggings begin to become an extension of the skin whenever the cold and chill of fall begins to set in. In the beginning, leggings were usually worn as separate pieces (one legging for each leg).

Nowadays, leggings almost look like slim pants and can even be worn as slim pants if the texture of the leggings is thick enough. In fact, even men used to wear leggings!

To go with your leggings, you need to choose the right outfits. Forget about "too much" loose-fitting clothing that only adds unwanted volume to your body. To wear long leggings, the ideal is to wear sweaters, short dresses, lumberjack shirts, oversized cardigans, tunics or loose sailors, all getting along with a high belt. What is important is that the tops are long enough to cover the butt.

Leggings and fashion

But what about fashion?

How do leggings play their part in making you and your outfit look good?

In some ways, leggings serve as an alternative to slim pants, or as an extra layer when you wear skater skirts. One of the easiest and most popular ways to wear leggings is to wear them as is and pair them with ankle boots or high boots. Black leggings would look great when paired with brown suede ankle boots as it helps the shoes stand out even more. A shirt or t-shirt can be worn next to this black leggings and ankle boots combo, and you can also add a jacket or cardigan into the mix if you want to cover even more skin.
